CARY — A Raleigh man who car ran out of fuel on Interstate 40 near Harrison Avenue on Thursday night was hit by a car and seriously injured as he was walking on the shoulder with a gas can, state troopers said Friday.
The car that hit Warren Woods, 29, had begun to pull onto the shoulder on the westbound side of the highway because the occupants, from California, were lost and were going to check a GPS unit for directions, they told troopers.
Woods was wearing dark clothing, and the driver of the car did not see him soon enough to avoid hitting him, troopers added.
Investigators estimated the car was going about 45 mph when it struck Woods, who is expected to recover, said State Highway Patrol spokesman 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon.
The accident took place about 9:40 p.m., Gordon said. No charges will be filed, he said.
