James C. Burns was inducted in Bandmasters Hall of Fame June 26, 2013 in Greensboro, NC. He was nominated by John Enloe. (Jimmy) attended Edmunds High School in Sumter, SC. His band director was James Pritchard. He attended Clemson University from 1953-1954. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years with Ed Rooker, playing in Army Bands. He attended East Carolina University earning his music degree. He was the band director for one year each at Southern Alamance High School and Zebulon High School. He became the Cary High School Band Director from 1964 to 1977. His Cary bands performed at numerous local civic events, Sun Fun Festival in Myrtle Beach, SC, Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Disney World, Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, a Washington Redskins football game, the U.S. Russia Track Meet at Duke University, 1972, the Rose Bowl twice (1973 & 1977) the U.S. Inaugural (Holshouser), Presidential Inaugural Parade (Ragan) to Geneva, Switzerland to perform at the Festes de Geneva. He was Tarheel of the week. He was given the keys to the Town of Sumter in 1973, the Town of Cary in 1974. In 1977 he stepped down as director of The Cary High School Band. He became the band director at Daniels and Ligon Middle School. He then became the band director at East Cary Middle School, until retirement. He worked at Pearson Music Company. He is still active with his trumpet in jazz bands in the Triangle Area. He has performed with The Triangle Brass Band, Barnum & Bailey Circus, Ice Show, Rodeos, and numerous other celebrities in the Raleigh-Durham Area.
