One Cary traffic roundabout open; second opens Saturday

From staff reportsJuly 24, 2013

— Start drivin’ in a circle.

One downtown Cary roundabout, at East Chatham Street and East Durham Road, is now open to traffic. The other, at West Chatham Street and Old Apex Road, will open Saturday.

Construction and detours have been in place for seven months. To celebrate the projects’ completion, the town is hosting a Roundabout 5K on Saturday. The run is a charity event to benefit the town’s Relief for Recreation Scholarship Fund.

The race route will feature some of Cary’s downtown revitalization efforts, including the Jones House, the Cary Arts Center and the farmers market.

“Completed on budget and almost on schedule despite unprecedented rain, the roundabouts create what we believe will become an iconic gateway into downtown Cary,” Kyle Hubert, project engineer, said in a statement. “We appreciate the public’s support during construction, and hope everyone turns out Saturday for the official dedication and run around the roundabouts.”

To register for the 5K, go to Race-day registration is also available; the race begins at 8 a.m.
