CARY Jim Beley, general manager of The Umstead Hotel & Spa, predicts patrons of the facility’s newly redesigned spa will be “pleasantly surprised with the upgrades.”
The spa recently reopened after being closed since April 1 for a complete overhaul and expansion.
“We have added enclosed garden areas on the first and second floors,” Beley said. “The men’s and women’s areas are more spacious and relaxing with lounges for pre- or post-service.”
In response to client interest, two couples’ massage rooms with soak tubs are now available.
“More couples are wanting to have the experience together,” Beley said.
The spa utilizes outdoor space with a private meditation courtyard and a current pool.
Although the spa is next to the hotel, services are available to everyone, not just those who staying at The Umstead.
“We are very fortunate to have a strong base in the local community,” Beley said. “The majority of our patronage are local. We have small groups, usually five to six women, who will come in together for a spa day.”
Here, Beley talks more about the business. His responses were edited for clarity and brevity.
Q: How much space was added to the spa?
We went from 14,500 square feet to 16,000 square feet, so a substantial amount of space.
Q: What services do you offer?
We are a full-service spa offering packages designed to suit each guest.
Our remodeled facility allows us to serve more guests. For example, we added chairs to our redesigned nail studio. The spa’s treatment menu includes massages, facials, body masks, body polishes and exfoliation treatments, hydro-therapy baths and showers, and manicures and pedicures.
Q: Are there separate areas for men and women?
Our men’s and women’s locker rooms each have steam, sauna and whirlpools. But we now have more areas for couples – living room areas for relaxation.
Q: What makes the spa stand out among the competition?
The quality of our services and our level of personalized service and attention to the guests distinguish us from other spas.
Q: What qualifications do your staff have?
All staff members are licensed by the state.
We have outstanding staff. When we closed for three months, employees had to either apply for unemployment benefits or find another part-time job.
All but two of those employees came back when we reopened.
Q: When is the spa the busiest?
Friday through Sunday, when hotel guests tend to use the spa. Reservations are strongly recommended.
