Apex student earns Eagle Scout

Matthew Wassel of Apex recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouting.

For his Eagle Scout project, Wassel planned, built and installed four picnic tables at prepared locations in Apex Community Park. He earned a grant titled the “Lowes National Eagle Scout Project Impact Grant” from Lowes Home Improvement to offset the cost of the project.

Wassel is the son of Peter and Lynn Wassel and is a senior at Panther Creek High School. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 316.

Local military institute cadets make dean’s list

The following Virginia Military Institute cadets were named to the dean’s list for the second semester of the 2012-13 academic year. To be eligible for the dean’s list, a cadet must have a term grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and no grade below C.

•  John E. Burton of Apex, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas B. Burton Sr.

•  Alexander S. Calogero of Cary, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Calogero

•  Travis A. Fudge of Fuquay-Varina, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Fudge

•  Andrew T. Starnes of Fuquay-Varina, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bradley T. Starnes

•  Tyler W. Weston of Holly Springs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky L. Weston
