Milton Senter is no stranger to winning. He got 575 wins while coaching Fuquay-Varina’s baseball team.

This year, he hit the perfect chord with the Bengals.

Last year’s team entered the season ranked one of the top 10 in the state. But this year’s team, without the preseason fanfare, finished second in the state.

Both teams were talented, but Senter said this year’s team – which returned several players from a year ago – worked harder, learning from last year’s shortcomings.

The result was a baseball team no one could put away easily.

A very good Richmond County team can tell you that: The Raiders had won 28 straight entering a game with Fuquay-Varina with a chance to sweep the 4A East series.

Instead, Fuquay broke Richmond’s streak; they then went to Rockingham and shut the door on the Raiders with a 12-0 win in five innings.

The Bengals won some games by blowout and others with late-game heroics. Even in losses in the state championship game, the group would just not go away.

That’s a credit to Senter, our Coach of the Year.
