Milestone of the Year: Freshmen tennis players win state titles

mblake@newsobserver.comJune 12, 2013

A milestone can be a record set or new mark achieved.

This year, the area had more records fall than were set.

Holly Springs wrestling snapped Cary’s 30-year run in the conference tournament and 20-year streak in the Mideast regional, while Green Hope girls’ tennis lost to Panther Creek after winning 82 straight conference matches.

But a milestone is also “a significant action or event marking a significant change or stage in development.”

That’s where the freshmen tennis players come in: They’ve changed the tide in local tennis, which is often second to Raleigh.

Jordan Strickland and Sammi Smith won 4A girls’ doubles for Panther Creek, going undefeated.

Nick Stachowiak also went undefeated, winning the 4A boys’ singles title for Middle Creek.

The freshmen made their mark, and they’ve got three years left. It’s a big change in the area, and the story is far from over.
