Four Tri-9 teams win opening playoff games

From staff reportsMay 13, 2013

Six Tri-9 softball teams made this year’s postseasons, and after round one there were four left standing.

Apex 8, Northern Durham 2: Lindsay Hodge struck out 12 and went 3-of-4 at the plate in the Cougars’ win. Apex (19-1) hosted Lumberton in the second round.

Middle Creek 4, Leesville Road 2: Middle Creek’s four early runs were enough to hang on in a game that was closer than expected. The Mustangs (17-4) hosted Wakefield in round two.

Fuquay-Varina 14, East Chapel Hill 0: Fuquay (13-4) had no trouble with the visiting Wildcats and moved on to face Southern Pines Pinecrest.

Green Hope 7, Riverside 0: The Falcons (14-7) showed the Tri-9’s strength as it went on the road and shut out Riverside. Green Hope’s next round was at Wake Forest.

Wake Forest 12, Holly Springs 2: Though the score was much closer than the early-year 18-3 loss, the young Golden Hawks (8-13) fell to Wake Forest-Rolesville again.

Garner 10, Athens Drive 0: Athens Drive (10-13) made it to the playoffs as the 4A East’s wild card but fell to a 16-2 Garner team. Tanya Van Dyk’s double in the second inning and a fly-ball out in the sixth were the only times the Jaguars hit a ball out of the infield.
