Southwestern Wake usually is a sure bet to have a team represented in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys’ golf state championships.

But not this year.

Instead, the three teams representing the Mideast will be Broughton, Riverside and Leesville Road. Those were the top three at Tuesday’s Mideast regional, hosted by the Raleigh Country Club.

But the region will have one golfer advancing.

Apex senior Zach Smith (74) was the third and final individual qualifier.

Smith topped Holly Springs’ Tim Conover in a three-hole playoff for the final spot.

“This is my first year being able to go states and it’s my senior year, so it was my last chance,” Smith said.

“Tim is one of my good friends and we compete in a lot of Tri-9 matches, but it’s exciting to represent our conference (at states).”
