Apex Middle School bands fundraiser

Apex Middle School bands will host a Swing Fling Big Band dance fundraiser from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 25, in the cafeteria. Swing-dancing lessons begin at 6:30 p.m. Live music will be provided by the Apex Middle School jazz band and NC Revelers. Tickets are $10 per person or $25 maximum per family. Ballentine team honored at robotics tournament

A team of fifth-graders from Ballentine Elementary School in Fuquay-Varina won the Teamwork Award at the FIRST Lego League State Championship in January.

The Burning Bricks team included Lydia Ward, Rachel Williams, Tyler Gilbert, Luke Simone, Emily Wade and Lindsey Ware. The team won awards for “Best Research” and “Gracious Professionalism” in earlier competitions.

In FIRST Lego League, students ages 9 to 14 participate in hands-on robotics competitions that emphasize team building, problem-solving, creativity and analytical thinking to develop solutions to a world problem. The theme of this year’s competition was “Senior Solutions,” with a focus on helping senior citizens remain active members of their communities.

McCallie School honors local student

Jay Gibbs of Morrisville was named to the fall semester Faculty Recognition List at the McCallie School.

The list honors academic efforts over the semester at the school, an independent boarding and day school in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Jay is the son of Corey and Melissa Holloway.

Cary student awarded Gen. Hugh Shelton/Caldwell Fellows scholarship

Josiah Keilson of Cary is the winner of the Gen. Hugh Shelton/Caldwell Fellows scholarship.

The scholarship is granted each year to an N.C. State University freshman and is a renewable award valued at $4,000 for the recipient’s sophomore, junior and senior years. Keilson will have access to additional funding to support various leadership opportunities. As a member of the Caldwell Fellows program, he will receive up to $1,500 annually for enrichment and leadership programs.

A member of the University Honors, Scholarship and Research Committee, Keilson produced, designed and effectuated the “Intellectual Cocktail Party Night” that attracted more than 70 attendees in its first year. The event allowed students the opportunity to discuss technology, economics, education, politics and philosophy with distinguished professors and faculty in a relaxed setting.

Keilson is the son of David Keilson and is a graduate of Cary Christian School. He is currently studying in the Poole College of Management at N.C. State University.
