CARY — A Cary teenager has confessed to starting the fire that caused a half-million dollars of damage to Cary Parkway. Tristan Zammit, 17, admitted the crime after a tip led police to him, according to police reports.
The Cary Police Department has charged Zammit with “intentionally setting fire to grass, brush lands or woodlands,” a misdemeanor that carries a sentence of up to 60 days and $1,000, reports state. The fire, which started just after 6 p.m. on March 21, spread into a culvert below the state-owned road, causing a long portion of the pipe to collapse. The N.C. Department of Transportation expects it will take several weeks to rebuild the road.
Currently, the westbound section of Cary Parkway between Two Creeks Road and Lake Pine Drive is closed; the eastbound section also will close next week, with detours in place through several weeks of construction.
