Green Hope won its third state title last year with an undefeated run. State titles aren’t unusual for Conference 2 teams.

The Green Hope Falcons and Apex have combined for seven titles in the last eight seasons.

But last year, Conference 2 showed it had more depth than just those two teams. Four teams made the postseason, and three of those got to the second round.

Green Hope (20-0): The Falcons will be tough again this season. New coach Joe Nassif has reigning conference player of the year in Maggie Auslander, along with leading scorer Katherine Smith and all-conference selections Julie Hagan, Kate Murphy and Mackenzie Koeller; goalie MaryCate Kapopoulos returns as well.

Apex (16-3): The Cougars pushed Green Hope last year, only losing by one in their second meeting. They will return all-conference selections in sophomore Mia Castagnero, junior Jessie DeLuca and senior Beth Fellows.

Panther Creek (11-6): Gone is Claire Wach, the school’s all-time leading scorer. But the Catamounts return defender Rachel Ungaro as well as Jill Green, who was the third-leading scorer last year.

Athens Drive (8-8): The Jaguars return all of last year’s top five scorers in Olivia Chason, Kieran Garvey, Colleen Kenedy, Stephanie Few and Rachael Oury.

Middle Creek (3-10): Holly Hite and Kasey Boudreau, the team’s two all-conference selections last year, return.

Cary (2-11): The Imps return one of the league’s best scorers in senior Sarah Hoyek, who has committed to Campbell.

Holly Springs (1-14): The Golden Hawks are losing their top five scorers from a year ago.
