Fifth grader Natalie Marochak from Laurel Park Elementary proudly displays her poster that shows innovative practices that slow and filter stormwater runoff, allowing the clean water to soak into the ground. A first for her school, Marochak was recognized as a Top Ten Winner in the 2013 Conservation Poster Contest sponsored by Wake Soil and Water Conservation District and Novozymes Nature's GREEN-RELEAF Composting.

Cary High students receive awards in Eastern/Central North Carolina Scholastic Art Exhibit

The following Cary High School students were awarded the Gold Key Award and will advance to the national exhibit in New York:

•  Erica Holmsen, a senior, for “Pixilated”

•  Nisa Woodley-Foster, a senior, for “Things I Want to Say.”

Silver Awards were awarded to:

•  Malinda Dietrich, a senior, for “V” in the Mixed Media category

•  Erica Holmsen, a senior, for “Say Cheese” in the Printmaking category

•  Adrian Karcevski, a junior, for “Subtle Man In Green” in the Drawing category.

An honorable mention was awarded to:

•  Chloe Scattergood, a freshman, for “Hi, My Name Is…” in the Drawing category.

‘Kohl’s Cares’ scholarship program

Kohl’s department stores are accepting nominations for outstanding young volunteers through Friday, March 15, for the 2013 Kohl’s Cares scholarship program. Nominations for kids ages 6 to 18 will be accepted at kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 or older.

Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card. More than 200 of the store winners will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education.

Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.

Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 7383 of Cary is holding a Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest for local high school students. Each entry will be judged on the originality of concept, presentation and patriotism expressed. One entry per student; art teachers must sign entry forms. National scholarships will be awarded to the top eight entries, with top prize a $10,000 scholarship. Entry deadline is March 31.

Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel scholarship

The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel are offering their 2013 history scholarship to high school seniors who are Cary residents. The $750 scholarship recognizes a student who exhibits an aptitude and passion for the study of history that could result in a career as a history teacher, museum educator, historian or historic preservationist.

The scholarship recipient’s name will be displayed on a permanent plaque at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center.

To be eligible, students must submit a 600- 1,000-word essay on a local history topic, along with an application and letter of recommendation from their high school history instructor. The 2013 history scholarship essay topic is “The Role of Education in Making Cary What it is Today.” Applications are due by Monday, April 15.
