CARY - At least one BB-gun armed vandal is on the warpath in central Cary. The town is calling it the case of the rogue “Red Ryder” and the BB gun bandits.

Forty people have had a vehicle window shot out by a BB gun since Nov. 23, police believe. Some incidents also have involved thrown eggs, and the vandal or vandals have struck four or five vehicles per night.

“Most of them are happening on weekends, early morning hours and late at night,” said Captain Don Hamilton. The incidents have spanned several miles and neighborhoods, with the majority happening inside the Maynard Loop, which circles downtown Cary.

Police so far have heard no reports of stolen items or injuries. “It’s obviously not for any financial gain,” Hamilton said. “Whoever’s doing it ... is just out damaging things to damage them. The motive behind it is probably ‘none.’”

Cary police recommend parking in a garage, driveway or well-lit area, and they ask residents to call 911 immediately upon witnessing suspicious activity. View a map of some of the incidents here.
