The only two area teams to make this year’s N.C. High School Athletic Association girls’ tennis playoffs are on their way to Tuesday’s second round.
Tri-Nine Conference champion Panther Creek defeated visiting Fayetteville Jack Britt 9-0 in last Tuesday’s opening round, while Green Hope traveled to previously undefeated Fayetteville Terry Sanford and came away with a 5-3 victory.
Panther Creek (18-1) dropped just three games in its match, and because doubles were played to 10 games, the Catamounts were able to claim 102 of the 105 games played.
All three doubles teams – Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland, Megan Smith and Orla Labiche and Loren Kim and Katie Ryan – won 10-0.
In singles, the Smith sisters, Strickland and Labiche all won 6-0, 6-0, while Kim won 6-0, 6-2 and Brooke Namboodri won 6-0, 6-1.
Green Hope (18-3) took four singles matches against Terry Sanford, including a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) third-set tiebreaker from No. 1 player Audrey Channell. Karena Zhang won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while No. 3 Jurasia Horvat picked up a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 victory and No. 5 Priyanka Srinivas won 6-5, 6-1.
Terry Sanford took the No. 3 doubles match to cut Green Hope’s lead to 4-3.
But Channell and Zhang teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a 10-2 win. With a 90-minute bus ride ahead of the Falcons, the teams agreed to not finish the No. 2 doubles match.
Green Hope will host Millbrook (13-6) while Panther Creek will play host to PAC-6 Conference champion East Chapel Hill (16-2).
