The African American Book Group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 760 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. The book, “Freeman” by Leonard Pitts will be discussed.

Afternoon Classics

Apex Historical Society

Apex Lions

The Apex Lions are collecting donations for Operation Sweet Tooth, which is a project that sends boxes filled with crackers, candy, pretzels and more to soldiers in Afghanistan. Apex Rotary Club

The Apex Rotary Club will sponsor the annual Apex Christmas Parade at 5 p.m. Dec. 1 beginning in the Villages of Apex and proceeding south on Salem Street. Organizations wishing to march in the parade or sponsor a float can download an entry form at www.apexrotary.org. Mail the entry forms to: Apex Rotary Club, P.O. Arthritis, Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia Support Group

An arthritis, chronic pain and fibromyalgia support group meets from 1:30 to 3 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in classroom one at the Rex Wellness Center, 1515 Cary Parkway, Cary. For details, call 919-387-0080.

Caregiver support

•  Homewatch Caregivers of the Triangle is an in-home companion and personal care agency. The support group meets on the third Thursday of each month at Cambridge of Apex. For information, call 919-960-6038.

N.C. Jaycees

The North Carolina Jaycees and the North Carolina Junior Chamber International Senators celebrated the 50th anniversary of the N.C. Jaycee Cottage at the North Carolina Boys and Girls Home on Aug. 18 in Lake Waccamaw. Terry Jones of Holly Springs was sworn in as 2012-13 North Carolina JCI Senate President in June. Jones was awarded by U.S. National JCI Senate President Bruce Geddes for being recognized as the Outstanding Senate President in the Nation. The N.C. Senate was recognized for the Return the Favor Award for the Best State in the Nation.

Southern Wake Quilters

The Southern Wake Quilters meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Randsdall Hall, 309 N. Ennis St., Fuquay-Varina. Arrive at 6:45 p.m. to sign in. Teen Library Corps

Teen Library Corps will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Eva Perry Regional Library, 2100 Shepherd’s Vineyard Drive, Apex. Teens in grades six through 12 can earn community service credit by helping the library with special projects such as cleaning, dusting and shelf reading. For details, call 919-387-2100.

VFW Post 7383

The Cary VFW Post 7383 will hold an inaugural open house from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at 522 Reedy Creek Road, Cary. The event will honor veterans, active military, their families and members of the community. There will be a meet and greet of national and local celebrities, a classic car display, Patriot Guard Motorcycle, a silent auction, activities for the children, an open house at the VFW Thrift Store, live music, a gun raffle and barbecue from Smoking Express. All proceeds will go to the Veterans and Families Relief Fund.

West Raleigh Exchange Club

The West Raleigh Exchange Club meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Williams Center at 830 Barringer Drive in Raleigh. For details, call Rhonda Bornman at 919-387-7201.
