SANFORD - Fuquay-Varina rushed for 278 yards but watched as host Lee County scored 34 unanswered points to pull away with a convincing 37-14 victory in a Tri-9 Conference matchup on Friday.
The loss snapped Fuquay-Varina’s six-game winning streak against Lee, and dropped the Bengals to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Lee senior quarterback Chase Arrington threw for 142 yards, ran for 110 more and scored two touchdowns, while classmate James Foushee (19 rushes, 159 yards) also found the end zone three times as the Yellow Jackets (3-1, 2-0) continued to score points in flurries this season.
Ultimately, the young Bengals were undone by four fumbles, which led to 17 Yellow Jacket points. Lee held F-V scoreless in the second half.
Fuquay led 14-3 at intermission and 14-10 late in the third before Arrington capped a 70-yard drive with a 5-yard score. His run was set up by Foushee’s 42-yard burst which gave Lee its first lead of the game, 17-14, with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter.
Foushee then made the backbreaking play on defense on the ensuing F-V possession, returning a Bengal fumble 32 yards for the score, giving the Yellow Jackets a 10-point cushion.
The Lee senior added his second and third touchdowns from 35 and 1 yards to conclude the scoring.
F-V sophomore Damarus Williams led the Bengals rushing attack with 122 yards, while junior quarterback Tyler Williams added 91. Each scored, with Williams breaking tackles on a 61-yard burst on the game’s second play from scrimmage.
Williams made the score 14-3 late in the first half on a one yard plunge after senior Kyle Smith took a handoff 64 yards for the Bengals.
Smith and Eric Sugarman each intercepted Arrington.
The Bengals were unable to pass the football though, finishing the contest 1-for-9 for minus one yards through the air.
The Yellow Jackets, in their final year as a member of the Tri-9 Conference, are one of four teams without a conference loss this year. Lee will play one of those teams next week when it travels to Middle Creek.
