Capel, a West Montgomery graduate, accounted for four of the East’s five rushing touchdowns on the night. He finished with 70 of the East squad’s 282 yards rushing.

Capel split quarterback duties with Southern Durham’s Dorian Belcher. Belcher made the adjustment to the East’s under-center offensive attack from the shotgun spread he was used to at Southern Durham.

“We ran the ball really well,” Belcher said. “Our line did a great job making holes, and our running backs were able to fill the holes. (Playing under center) was different, it took some adjusting, but it worked for us on the scoreboard.”

Capel tied the mark Greenville Rose product Doug Paschal set in the 1976 game. The West, which leads the all-time series 37-26-1, fell before a crowd of 7,623 at Greensboro Grimsley’s Jamieson Stadium.

The East defense, featuring Panther Creek’s Josh Lockyer on the defensive line and Apex’s Shawn Knox at linebacker, held the West squad without a third-down conversion until midway of the third quarter. The West’s offense was 0-for-7 on third-down conversions to open the game.

The West’s offense did drive inside the 5-yard-line early in the fourth quarter, but the middle of the East defense held.

“We started off well, attacking them with some stunts,” said Lockyer, who had two solo tackles. “We were able to create some space in the middle of the field for our linebackers to make plays.”
