Marisa Bishop of Cary was recently crowned Queen of the Greater Greensboro/ Reidsville Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. Money raised from the contest will be used to provide scholarships to high school graduates who are entering college.

Marisa is the 12-year-old daughter of Mathias and Gwen Bishop. She is a seventh grader at Cary Academy and is active in the Cary Teen Council and Cary School of Music.

Devil’s Ridge Charity Golf Classic to be held July 18

The Men’s Golf Association of Devil’s Ridge Golf Club will hold the eighth annual Devil’s Ridge Charity Golf Classic at 9 a.m. July 18 at 5107 Linksland Drive, Holly Springs. Proceeds will go to the Prostate Cancer Coalition of North Carolina. There will be $1,800 in team prizes, raffle tickets and a silent auction. Participants can support the event by becoming a golf participant or hole sponsor; donating gift certificates, prizes or other items; purchasing raffle tickets or entering the silent auction. Fuquay-Varina resident invited to NBA tryouts in New York City

Emmanuel Williams, 18, of Fuquay-Varina was invited to participate in the NBA D-League National tryouts on June 16 in New York City.

The tryouts consisted of 20 teams and players ranging from ages 18 to 30, with some players with professional or college experience. Williams scored in double figures, handed out assists and led his team.

Williams played on a summer AAU team, which led to a starting position in the N.C. Home Education Athletic Conference. While playing in the league he earned several basketball honors: All-State, All-Region and All-Conference. Williams currently holds the USSSA record for most three-pointers in a single game with 10.

Williams is the son of Bobby and Lucy Williams. He is currently finishing up his freshman year at Liberty University.

Cary student selected for NASA summer camp

Ashle Mills Page of Cary was selected as one of five students from North Carolina to attend a six-day summer camp sponsored by the Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars project at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston in June and July.

The women will work in teams with female NASA mentors to develop mission plans for launching to Mars, living and working there, and integrating the many components necessary for a successful planetary mission. They will work within the confines of a fictitious budget and build several small mockups of vehicles to demonstrate a successful launch and landing of the Mars spacecraft.

Local residents awarded cash for Unusual Litter Contest

Two out of four winners have been awarded cash prizes in Keep NC Beautiful’s Unusual Litter Contest from southwestern Wake County. Entries were from participants who picked up litter during the Great American Cleanup and the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Litter Sweep. The two winners in our area are:

•  Christopher Cassada, Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnology, Morrisville, second place for $100. Cassada found a money machine on Leesville Road near Hwy 70.

•  Leigh Adams, Kenexo RPO, Cary, third place tie for $50. Adams found a pair of men’s shoes covered in moss found on Reedy Creek Road/Weston Parkway in Cary.

Winning entries are awarded cash prizes of $250 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. All entry forms for the fall Unusual Litter Contest are due by Oct. 31 and can be downloaded at www.keepncbeautiful.org.
