Vickie Wang of Cary is one of 50 students from the southeastern U.S. and Puerto Rico to be awarded a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship for the 2012-2013 school year.

Wang will spend the school year in Germany living with a host family, taking classes at a local high school and participating in a three-week language and cultural immersion camp. She will also have the chance to visit the German Bundestag and meet with American and German government officials.

Wang is a sophomore at William G. Enloe High School.

Cary resident wins Canadian math competition

Calvin Deng of Cary won first prize and the Sun Life Financial Cup at the 44th annual Canadian Mathematical Olympiad competition.

The Canadian Mathematical Olympiad competition is Canada’s premier national advanced mathematics competition and is staged by the Canadian Mathematical Society. Students who participate in the competition are invited based on their scores in the Canadian Open Math Challenge or their scores in other recognized competitions.

Deng attends the N.C. School of Science and Math.

Triangle Aquatic Center holds Swim Across America event

Swimmers and spectators gathered on May 19 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary in a joint effort to support the fight against cancer in the area’s first National Swim Across America event. The Triangle Aquatic Center raised over $15,000 for breast and blood cancers. The event consisted of individuals and relay teams swimming half mile, mile and 5k lengths, with several participants raising over $1,000 for the cause. Olympic hopeful Erica Braun participated in the event, along with local swimming legend Sue Walsh who held a short clinic at the end of the event.

Cary resident earns high score on ACT

Jin Ho Yoon of Cary earned a top composite score of 36 on a recent ACT test.

Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, roughly one-tenth of one percent receive a top score. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2011, only 704 of more than 1.6 million students earned a composite score of 36.

Yoon is the son of Sug Chang and Hye Kyoung Yoon and a junior at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics.
