Memorial Day events in Cary, Apex
A Memorial Day parade featuring N.C. State University's Pipes and Drums, Miss North Carolina and the local Legion of Honor will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, at the Cambridge Village, 951 S. Hughes St., Apex.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 28; these local events will honor the day:

• Members of Cary Franklin-Sloane VFW Post 7383 will place U.S. flags by the headstones of veterans at Cary cemeteries at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 27. At the request of some churches, some flags will be postponed until Monday at their respective cemeteries.

• A ceremonial retirement of no longer serviceable U.S. flags by incineration will be performed at noon Sunday, May 27, at 522 Reedy Creek Road, Cary. Unserviceable flags may be dropped off any afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. For details, call 919-467-1188 or visit www.vfwpost7383.org.

• Boy Scout-Cub Scout Pack 222 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at Macedonia Baptist Church, 7100 Holly Springs Road, Raleigh. Bring a chair and U.S. flags in need of retirement. Flags may also be dropped off at the church in advance.

• A Memorial Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, at Cambridge Village, 951 S. Hughes St., Apex. There will be a parade featuring N.C. State University’s Pipes and Drums, Miss North Carolina and the local Legion of Honor.

Speakers include N.C. Rep. Paul Stam; Bill Mitchell, a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross; Jack MacNaughton, a D-Day Navy veteran; and Bill Simpson, an infantry veteran in the battle for the Anzio Beachhead during WWII.
