Cardinal Gibbons rolls over Athens Drive
Gibbons clinches conference championship
Cardinal Gibbons was locked in a tight struggle with Athens Drive for the first half of its boys’ lacrosse match on the Crusaders’ field, holding a three-goal lead at the break. Then Gannon Morrison struck twice and the Crusaders were off to the races.Morrison had his two goals within a nine-second span in the first minute of the third period to give his team the working margin. He also added three assists to help lead Cardinal Gibbons to a 14-3 romp against the Jaguars that clinched a conference championship Wednesday night. The victory lifted the Crusaders to 16-0 with just one regular-season game remaining, while the Jaguars – who also lost to Gibbons 8-6 at home on March 16 – fell to 10-3.“Our guys really stepped up and came ready to play tonight,” said Cardinal Gibbons coach Mike Curatola, who had collected his 200th career victory in that road win at Athens. “I’m very proud of them. Athens Drive is a very good team, and just a couple of extra shots went in for us tonight.“I think the first part of the third quarter really improved our game and our confidence as well. We have a lot of unselfish guys who move the ball very much, and it’s a great thing.”Morrison wasn’t the only one to fill up the score sheet for the Crusaders, who were up 6-3 at the break.Ben Huger had three goals and two assists, and Tyler VanHorn and Matt Skowron each had a hat trick. Danny Dorsett had a goal and four assists, and Robbie Lavelle added two goals and two assists. “Colin McKendry won some huge faceoffs for us that helped set up my goals,” Morrison said. “Those fast-break goals were just good teamwork.”Daniel Hughey led Athens Drive with a goal and an assist.“We stuck together as a team, played well on both offense and defense and were able to move the ball in transition,” VanHorn said. “It worked out really well for us. Athens is a great team and we needed a good effort.”
