Four Cary High School students received awards in the national Scholastic Art Awards program. Senior Shelby Scattergood was one of 214 Regional Gold Key award finalists. Silver Key award winners included: Vivian Childers, Madison Hindsley and Shelby Scattergood. Erin Martin earned an Honorable Mention.

Three Salem Middle School students won awards for their science projects at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair held Feb. 18 at Wakefield Middle School in Raleigh.

Mridu Nanda, Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for ability and creativity in an atmospheric science exhibit from the American Meteorological Society

Hillison, Brush and Nanda will compete at the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair March 23-24 at Meredith College.

Winners of the Salem Middle School science fair held in January were: Nanda, first place; Brush, second place; and Hank Hershberger, Nathan Puertollano and Daniel Lindsay, all taking third place.

WAKE ELECTRIC SCHOLARSHIP

Wake Electric is seeking applicants for a $1,000 college scholarship and trip to Washington, D.C., for the 2012 Rural Electric Youth Tour June 15-22.

Students who win the two available North Carolina Rural Electric Youth Tour spots will join 1,500 high school students from across the country to learn about electric cooperatives, American history and the U.S. government.

Applicants must be current high school juniors in Wake, Durham, Johnston, Vance, Granville, Nash or Franklin counties. Deadline to submit applications is March 15. To download an application, visit www.wemc.com/youthtours.aspx .
