Congratulations to the Morrisville Town Council for recently approving a conditional rezoning for Town Hall Commons ("Builder gets OK - with limits," Feb. 19). It resulted in an important and unique compromise.
Over several months, the council held two public hearings, the developer held town hall briefings, and many meetings were held for our neighbors from all over Morrisville.
The result (was) 23 conditions covering the new single-family homes, and road-building and recreation were added to the original request.
To the council's credit, (members) were able to make a timely and dramatic vote.
Developer Ed White impressed many with uncommon willingness to promote quality development and listen to residents. He reached out to those in adjoining neighborhoods, especially the Gables, and accommodated every reasonable request including additional turn lanes on McCrimmon Drive and an extensive recreation center remodeling.
Residents now know they can make a difference.
This is a wonderful example of a community working together. We have a builder working for realistic consensus and willing to make compromise work. Our Town Council has been responsive and clearly determined to do the right thing. And residents were fully engaged.
This is how public-private collaboration should work where the whole is truly greater than the sum.
