Middle Creek's Rashawn King, center, is the national runner-up in the third annual Inspireum Football 'Rudy' Award. He received a $2,500 scholarship from the program, which celebrates athletes who inspire and motivate teammates, classmates and communities.
King is a football and basketball player who returned to competition after being diagnosed with leukemia in June 2010. The Middle Creek community rallied around King, holding a Rashawn King night at a 2010 football game.
The school also had a Pray for Ray campaign that became a Play with Ray slogan when he returned to the football team last fall as a wide receiver. He is also playing basketball this season.
The national award winner is Addison Marshall of Fulshear, Texas, also a cancer survivor.
