The offensive coordinator at Leesville Road was named the Hawks head coach Tuesday.

Leesville Road finished 12-1 and averaged 51.5 points per game during the 2011 season. Leesville averaged 373.4 rushing yards and had 485.7 total yards per game.

"I have an offensive background and I've been an offensive coordinator, offensive line coach or head coach for my entire career, but I believe that you've got to be strong on defense and on special teams, too," Orbin said. "You've got to be good in all three phases.

"You start building in the weight room, where you develop discipline and mental toughness. I'm ready to get started. I'm fired up."

Orbin is a native of Washington, Pa., near Pittsburgh. The N.C. State graduate also was the offensive coordinator at Broughton under Danny Bolick and at Southeast Raleigh under Chad O'Shea in previous coaching stops.

Orbin is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Just Cause.

Orbin came to Leesville Road from Griffin (Ga.) High, where he was offensive coordinator in a program that was 23-3 in his final two seasons and set school records for scoring. The school had five Division I recruits during his final season in 2010.

Before that, he was head coach at East Rowan High in 2004. The program won seven games the preceding four years and was coming off an 0-11 season but finished 5-7 under Orbin. He was the North Piedmont 3A Coach of the Year that season.

"Will Orbin is a great hire for Holly Springs," said Leesville Road coach Chad Smothers. "Will was instrumental in the success our program had in 2011. He is a very dedicated and high-energy coach. He will do a great job at Holly Springs."

Orbin succeeds veteran coach Dave Riggs, who came out of retirement to coach the Hawks. Riggs' 1970 Broughton team won a state title. He was also a head coach at Athens Drive, Cary and Fuquay.

"After last season, David decided that he wanted to spend more time with his family," said Andy Wheeler, athletics director at Holly Springs. "David is one of the finest men that I know, but I think we have found a good replacement."

Orbin said Riggs left a solid foundation.

"David Riggs is a great man and he builds character in young men," Orbin said. "There is just a ton of potential at Holly Springs. The school still has a community feel, and I believe we can be really successful."
