Mr. William Hubert Johnson, 88, of Raleigh died December 4, 2011 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh after suffering a brain hemorrhage. Johnson was born in Pitt County but spent most of his life in Raleigh. He was the tenth child of twelve born to the late James Archie Johnson and Mary Gaston Atkins Johnson on December 8, 1922. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his sisters, Georgie Johnson Leggett, Allene Johnson Wiggins, Polly Johnson Parris, & Lillian Beatrice Johnson; his brothers, Neil A. Johnson, Tapley O. Johnson, & James A. Johnson, Jr.

Mr. Johnson served in Italy in WWII as a member of the Army Air Corps. He received an honorable discharge in late 1945. He didn’t lose his life in the war, but he was a casualty; he suffered from symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder all of his life. Mr. Johnson worked with his brother Sam at Archie Johnson & Sons Sewing Machine Repair and Sales in Raleigh.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his brothers, John L. (Jack) Johnson of Fairmont, NC; Samuel A. Johnson, Sr.; and Benjamin A. Johnson, both of Raleigh; and his sister, Mary Stewart Johnson Gillis of Fayetteville, NC; and many nieces and nephews who knew him simply as ‘Uncle Bill’. He had many wonderful qualities but will be remembered especially for his kindness and innocence.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home of Lillington, NC. A memorial service to celebrate his life and spirit is planned for January 15, 2012, 3pm at Summerville Presbyterian Church, near Lillington. Mr. Johnson has been buried in the cemetery of the Summerville Presbyterian Church next to the graves of his parents and other family members. Condolences may be submitted to the family via:
