In response to Mr. (Frank) Schiermeier's (Dec. 25) letter regarding the wireless water meter project eliminating meter reader positions. Yes, I am certain that part of the $2 million in savings over 17 years is headcount reduction. But the efficiency and accuracy of the process has been improved.

Perhaps we should bemoan the installation of electric traffic lights, as I am sure it displaced a traffic control officer or two. The advent of direct dial telephones probably forced some operators into a different line of work.

This efficiency will save the residents of Cary money, and that is what is important in today's tough economic climate.
