CARY - Late in the fourth quarter of the Vision Sports Holiday Invitational championship game Friday night, Neuse Christian botched an alley-oop attempt that resulted in a turnover.
It was about the only thing the Lions (14-1) did wrong in the fourth against CaryAcademy (5-8), as they out-scored the Chargers 30-5 in the closing period to pull away in a 68-37 victory to win the title.
"Our guys just ran out of gas, unfortunately," said Cary Academy coach Kenny Inge. "A lot happened from the start of the fourth until the end to make that final score, but the guys played hard."
It was the second loss of the day for Cary Academy, who lost to Northern Durham 72-56 in the tournament's semifinals earlier Friday, but still had a shot at the championship.
Northern Durham was not allowed to play two games in one day. Northern was still declared the runner-up because CA lost in the title.
The Chargers maintained a slow pace in the first half, and led 25-24.
"I think (Neuse Christian) was shocked at the way we came out and competed with them," Inge said. "(But) it was just a matter of time before they were able to attack our zone (defense)."
The Lions started to do just that in the third quarter, taking a six-point lead into the fourth and opening the final period with a 17-2 run.
Duke led Cary Academy with 15 points.
Aaron Overton was named to the all-tournament team.
Grace Christian's boys went 1-2 in the Vision Sportstournament, falling to St. David's 63-48 in its final game.
Cary Christian's boys (3-10) won their final two games in the tournament after losing their first two.
The Knights' Chris Thomas scored 97 points, placing him second among all players.
The South Wake Sabres, a homeschool team, finished the tournament 0-3.
In the girls bracket, the Grace Christian girls (7-7) lost 60-36 to DurhamAcademy and finished sixth in the tournament.
