I just finished reading the article "Officer shapes how police treat mentally ill" in the Wednesday, Dec. 14, Cary News. I wanted to express my thanks to Officer Macario for his sensitivity on this subject and helping to make the Raleigh Police Department a better one regarding dealing with people with mental illness.

I too, have a sister who is mentally ill, along with losing my father to Alzheimer's (disease) five years ago, so I have had much experience in this area and have tremendous empathy for those who suffer from any form of mental illness.

We could use more officers like M.J. Macario, and what a fine example he sets.
