RALEIGH - Athens Drive’s Dylan Haupt had 20 points at halftime.

Haupt scored in a variety of ways, from driving to the basket to having jumps shots go off the backboard to knocking down 3-pointers in transition. His Jaguars were up by as many as 13 points against non-conference foe Broughton and led 38-29 at the break.

But as has been a familiar tale with the Jags this year, Athens Drive ran out of gas.

Broughton (6-4) held Haupt to two points in the second half, and that was a big reason why the Caps prevailed 69-55.

The Caps started the third quarter in a full-court press, which made it difficult for Athens Drive’s guards to get the ball to Haupt. Broughton caught Athens Drive (4-7) with a 16-3 run in the third quarter.

“I think we just started having fun,” Broughton’s Devonte Graham said. “Everything just came to us.”

Graham, who finished with 23 points, fueled the comeback along with forward James Hemphill, who added 16 points and seven rebounds.

No play highlighted Broughton’s turnaround more than what happened late in the third quarter. With the Caps (6-4) in the midst of their run, Hemphill and guard Chris Corchiani forced the Jaguars into a turnover on a half-court trap.

As the crowd rose to its feet, the Caps didn’t rush on offense, instead making four passes before finding guard Zach Palmer wide open.

“That was really the turning point in the game,” Hemphill said. “I think everyone’s morale got up. It’s a great feeling to see that.”

Palmer, who had just entered the game off the bench, didn’t hesitate in putting up and swishing a 3-pointer that gave Broughton a seven-point lead and forced Athens Drive coach Robert Clemons Jr. to call a timeout.

But Broughton kept rolling the rest of the way.

“They really took it to us in the first half and we just backed off,” Broughton coach Jeff Ferrell said. “I think our defense is what got our offense going. I think the guys were more focused.”
