There is no official record for these kind of things, but it's unlikely that you'll ever see a week quite like the one the Panther Creek athletics department enjoyed last week.
The school was retroactively awarded a wrestling tournament it thought it had finished second in, was given a forfeited win in girls basketball for a game it had lost by 12 points and was also bumped up a spot in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup.
Is there some kind of Catamount voodoo we need to be wary of?
That's three incidents where PC wound up enjoying a better result after the original event.
In the case of the wrestling tournament, an error in scoring the Dec. 10 Bull City Classic gave Holly Springs a narrow victory.
Jordan High, the host of the tournament, reported the error to the schools Dec. 12, and that Panther Creek had in fact edged Holly Springs 246 to 245.
Jordan wasn't done giving PC good news. The Falcons' girls' basketball team had discovered that one of its players who dressed for the season-opener against Panther Creek had too many absences and was not eligible for that game.
On Friday, Jordan forfeited the 62-50 win.
Also on Friday, the Tri-Nine Conference reported that the initial Conference Cup standings released by the N.C. High School Athletic Association had numerous errors.
Panther Creek moved from third to second.
I'm not sure what's going on with the Catamounts, but maybe there's something to the legend of receiving bad luck when a black (and blue) Cat crosses your path.
Triple-doubles: Two area junior girls basketball players have recorded triple-doubles this season.
Green Hope's Ashley Williams (11 points 12 steals, 10 assists) accomplished the feat in the season opener at Wilson Hunt on Nov. 21.
Panther Creek's Allie Tuttle (26 points, 12 rebounds,10 blocks) notched her first career triple-double on Nov. 29 against Athens Drive.
Falcons lead Fargo Cup: After the completion of fall sports, the NCHSAA announced its standings for the statewide Wells Fargo Cup, an award given to the top athletic programs in the state based on postseason performance.
Green Hope is atop the 4A class, as is Cardinal Gibbons in 3A.
Conference Cup: After revision, here are the standings for the Tri-Nine Conference Cup: Green Hope 52.5, Panther Creek 43, Apex 41.5, Cary 37, Middle Creek 36.5, Fuquay-Varina 33.5, Athens Drive 30, Holly Springs 28, Lee County 13.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
Herbst to Mountaineers: Apex senior Alex Herbst, the Cougars' leading scorer this season, has committed to Appalachian State.
Herbst, a midfielder, was recently named to the NSCSA all-state team.
