Apex High honored four of its best former baseball players at a halftime ceremony during its Friday boys' basketball home game against Holly Springs.
Tim Federowicz, Michael Knox, Matt Mangini and Seth Frankoff - all currently playing at the major or minor league level - will be honored with a banner of their Apex jerseys that will be placed along the baseball field's outfield wall this spring.
To date, only Landon Powell - a former first-round pick now playing catcher for the Oakland Athletics - has been honored at the school.
Mangini is a 2004 graduate of Apex. He played one season at N.C. State before transferring to Oklahoma State, where he played in one College World Series and was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round in 2007.
Mangini made his Major League debut in 2010 with the Mariners, where he spent last season as a first baseman. He has signed with the Tampa Bay Rays for 2012 spring training.Federowicz, a 2005 graduate of Apex, went on to enjoy a star-studded career at UNC-Chapel Hill, starting in three College World Series. After being drafted by the Boston Red Sox, the catcher made his MLB debut last season after being dealt to the L.A. Dodgers.
Frankoff graduated in 2006 and went on to play at UNC-Wilmington. He was selected in the 27th round by the Oakland Athletics in 2010 and has been pitching in the organization's minor league system for two years.Knox is a 2007 Apex grad who recently was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 41st round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Knox started his career at UNC-Chapel Hill but transferred to Mount Olive College, where he shattered school records and was an all-American first baseman.
