A lot can change between a high school student's junior and senior year. And that's exactly what Markez Davis was looking for.
After running for just more than 300 yards and three touchdowns for Holly Springs in 2010, Davis knew he needed to change what he was doing to fulfill his dream of playing college football.
"After last year, that wasn't looking good at all," Davis said.
Davis asked Golden Hawks assistant coach Chris Satterfield if he could begin working out the week after the season ended.
"That Tuesday (after the season ended), I was working," Davis said. "Every week I was putting in some legitimate work after school, going to football workouts, staying after football, working on the weekends. I mean, I put in some work. That 300 yards wasn't enough for me."
After a breakout senior season in which he ran for 1,296 yards and 17 touchdowns, Davis will be playing at the U.S. Air Force Academy next year. Once he suits up for Air Force, Davis would be the first Golden Hawks player in school history to play for a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision program.
Air Force's full scholarship offer was one of the first he received. Coaches were impressed with his game film, as well as his 4.2 GPA and 40-yard dash timed at 4.51 seconds.
"Prior to the offer, I had no intentions whatsoever of going into a military establishment," Davis said. "I looked into it a little more, then slowly but surely I started asking around and started liking it more and more. Everybody had something good to say and nobody had anything bad to say. After doing my research, it was an opportunity I definitely couldn't give up."
Already on the Falcons' roster is Middle Creek graduate Jordan Mays. Mays plays defensive back and will be a senior next fall.
