David Riggs resigns from Holly Springs coaching post
Just a few hours after news of Panther Creek losing its football coach Wednesday, Holly Springs head football coach David Riggs told returning players that he was resigning from his post.Riggs was at Holly Springs for just two seasons, going 4-17 in those two years with the Golden Hawks. He was the second coach in program history, coming out of retirement to take the position. The first, Jim Hynus, passed away this season.Riggs had been out of coaching for two seasons before taking over at Holly Springs. He coached for 34 years, almost all of them in Wake County. He led Broughton to the state 4A championship in 1970, started the program at Athens Drive (1979-81), revived Fuquay-Varina's football program (2005-07) and also made stops at Cary (1973-78) and Sanderson (1989-91).His career record is about 179-142. He spent four years at McDowell High before coming to Fuquay-Varina.His 4A championship at Broughton in 1970 is the last time any Raleigh school has won a state title. In college, he was captain of the 1967 University of North Carolina team, and later a graduate assistant.Four Tri-Nine Conference teams now have football coaching vacancies, with Apex and Athens Drive joining Holly Springs and Panther Creek.
