CARY - The ups and downs of start of Panther Creek's boys basketball team were encapsulated in a wild final minutes Wednesday night.

Down six to visiting Wake Forest-Rolesville with a little more than two minutes remaining, the Catamounts hit four straight shots -- including three consecutive 3-pointers. But five turnovers in that same time span prevented Panther Creek from ever taking the lead.

The team's final and 22nd turnover of the night came with 20 seconds left, as sophomore Nubian Spann grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw, threw a hurried outlet pass to midcourt, where it was intercepted.

Wake Forest-Rolesville prevailed 64-60, dropping PC to 3-3 overall.

"This is a team that doesn't have a whole lot of guys who have played varsity minutes," second-year PC coach Mark Adams said.

"Instead of keeping their composure, there's a little bit of panic out there and guys being uncomfortable. We made some great plays, but we were also in a position where we could've made some plays but we took ourselves out by not taking care of the basketball and giving us the opportunity to get off a shot."

Panther Creek's David Robertson scored a game-high 24 points, which is just a hair below his season average.

"He was a good player last year, but he's a great player this year. It's because of his work ethic," Adams said. "He's doing as much as we can ask of him for this team. And I think other guys, in spots, have stepped up. But until we get a more consistent other guys stepping up, David is carrying that load for us."

Robertson is the only returning starter for PC, which is still learning as they get ready to end their second straight three-game week.

"We're a work in progress," second-year coach Mark Adams said. "The tough part right now is we're playing a brutal schedule. You're talking about playing five games in eight games."
