A home-invasion suspect held a Cary man at gunpoint, duct-taped him to a bed and stole his vehicle this morning, according to the Cary Police Department. The Wilson's Mills Police Department arrested the suspect, James Edwin Deetz, 26, about an hour later on U.S. 70.

The 51-year-old victim said he came upon an intruder in his home on the 300 block of Tweed Circle about 9:35 a.m.

After the victim returned home from errands, the suspect "came around the corner ... and displayed a handgun," said Capt. Randall Rhyne. The intruder then bound the victim and stole his wallet before escaping in the victim's black 2005 Cadillac STS, according to Cary police.

The victim soon freed himself and fled to a neighbor's house to contact the police, who sent out an inter-agency alert about the car and suspect.

Wilson's Mills police officers arrested Deetz during a traffic stop on U.S. 70 near Buffalo Road about 11 a.m., Rhyne said. No one was available for immediate comment on the circumstances.

Cary Police Department believes the crime was "an isolated incident of opportunity," Rhyne said.

"According to the suspect, what drew him to the home was that the garage door was open," he added. As of 2 p.m. today, Deetz was in police custody in Cary and had not been processed at the Wake County jail. his bond had not yet been assigned.

Cary police were unsure of Deetz' permanent address, but his criminal record listed a Cary address as of May of last year. Those most recent charges, one count of breaking and entering and one of damage to real property, were dismissed.
