CARY - Green Hope captain Will Moore was a sophomore who had just been brought up to varsity the last time Green Hope played for the N.C. High School Athletic Association boys soccer championship.

This weekend, he'll be starting in it thanks in part to his two goals in Green Hope's 4-0 victory over Southern Pines Pinecrest in the 4A East final.

Coach Andrew Chadwick was concerned that his team, coming off a win against Fuquay-Varina where his Falcons scored four second-half goals for a 4-3 win, would come out flat.

"It was such an emotional, draining game and our team was on such a high, that, even though it was the semifinal, we might have a little let down," Chadwick said. "The kids realized this would be the last game they play together on this field."

Green Hope controlled the game from the outset, not allowing Pinecrest possession past midfield until six minutes into the game.

The Falcons struck first in the 12th minute when a bullet throw-in to the near post by Ryan Thompson skidded off the head of central defender Will Moore and into the side netting.

The second goal was another Thompson-to-Moore connection. This time the throw Moore redirected the ball with his foot, putting the Falcons up 2-0 with 4:24 left in the half.

After the first throw-in was so successful, Moore said he told Thompson to look for him at the near post a second time.

"Sure enough it was open," Moore said. "I just flicked it through the goalie's legs."

Green Hope maintained that lead until halftime, having dominated the game in nearly every facet. Green Hope outshot Pinecrest 18-3.

Goalkeeper Thomas Mousseau's first save didn't come until 5:54 left in the game.

"(Moore) tends to hold back and play a bit of a sweeper and he can tell people which way they're coming. And if they doesn't see them I'll tell them," Mousseau said. "We just have great communication."

A little more than 15 minutes into the second half, a nifty Falcons build-up ended with Kellen Foster finding Fraser Murphy unmarked in the penalty area. Murphy put Green Hope up 3-0.

Tommy Labriola had the games final goal. After Labriola had the ball knocked away trying to split two Pinecrest defenders, Michael Muio found him along in the penalty box.

Labriola beat the goalkeeper to the near post for the game's final goal.

The Falcons will play at 5 p.m. Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park. They await the winner of Wednesday's 4A West final between Charlotte Myers Park and Asheville T.C. Roberson.
