East Cary Middle students and staff celebrated Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24-28. Red ribbons were posted throughout campus as a visual reminder to commit to a drug-free life. Students signed a "Peace Out to Drugs" banner in the cafeteria as a pledge to avoid drugs and alcohol. Staff wore red ribbons throughout the week, while students wore red wrist bands.
The Fuquay-Varina Band Boosters will hold a 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run/Walk at 2 p.m. Nov. 20 at 201 Bengal Blvd. The 5K will begin at 2:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit band programs. For details, visit www. FVBB .com .
Green Hope High School needs help painting 100 bowls from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at West Regional Library, 4000 Louis Stephens Drive, Cary. The bowls will be sold at the Empty Bowls fundraiser dinner for the Raleigh Rescue Mission and Artspace in February. Sign up is required for a slot from noon to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., or 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 5 and up. To sign up, call 919-463-8500.
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation is accepting submissions from high school students for the national John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest. Deadline for entries is Jan. 7.
The winner will be awarded $5,000 and an additional $5,000 to grow in a John Hancock Freedom 529 College Savings Plan. The student's nominating teacher will be awarded a $500 John F. Kennedy Public Service Grant to be applied towardprojects involving student leadership and civic engagement. The essay contest winner and nominating teacher will also receive an expense paid round-trip to Boston, where they will be honored by Caroline Kennedy at the annual John F.
