HOLLY SPRINGS - With their season hanging in the balance, the Lee County Yellow Jackets wanted one player holding the ball.
Lee senior running back Josh Brinkley carried the ball on all 12 of the Yellow Jackets final plays, including the game-winning four yard touchdown run with just 46 seconds left, to propel Lee to a 17-14 win over Holly Springs in the regular season finale.
Brinkley posted 55 of his game-high 121 yards on Lees final drive. The victory moved the Yellow Jackets to 4-6 on the year and kept them with a shot at the post season, which begins next Friday.
Were a really young team and to get four wins in this conference (Tri-Nine) is good, said Lee County coach Burton Cates. Josh is a great kid and hed be the first to tell you that our offensive line really stepped it up tonight.
Lee's left tackle, 6-foot-4 Victor Ingram, plowed open holes for Brinkley, especially in the fourth period.
The Golden Hawks (2-8) took the lead 14-10 in the third when senior Markez Davis scored his second touchdown of the game on a four-yard run with 7:37 left in the period.
Davis, who also scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter, led the Hawks with 24 carries for 118 yards.
We fought hard all year, there were some close games where we came up just a bit short, said Davis, who has been offered a full scholarship from the Air Force Academy. We did all we could do.
Holly Springs made Lee sweat it out in the final minute.
After Brinkleys TD, Hawks quarterback Brett Hudspeth completed passes to Joey Roach and Brandon Jones (3 catches for 78 yards) to set Holly Springs at the Yellow Jacket 18-yard line with 16 seconds left.
After a great sack by a Lee defender, time ran out before Hudspeth could spike the ball.
Including the Lee County game, Holly Springs lost four games by a touchdown or less.
