CARY - There is an old expression in football that there's no such thing as a bad win, but Cary coach Ben Kolstad admitted this one tested the limits.
The Imps beat Green Hope 28-8 Friday night at Cooper Field in a game marred by multiple personal fouls.
"Ugly, Kolstad said. I'm proud of the way they finished the game and did what they had to do win the game. I think we got frustrated by the type of game it was.
The No. 11-ranked Imps improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Tri-Nine Conference with the win in their regular-season home finale. Green Hope lost its sixth straight game to fall to 2-8 and 0-7.
Green Hope finished the night penalized 13 times for 142 yards, while Cary was flagged 12 times for 98 yards.
At one point, the referees called both teams together in a huddle at midfield and talked to the players for several minutes to calm emotions.
Green Hope has had players ejected from games earlier this season, but this time it was a Cary player ejected. Kolstad said he plans to file appeal.
Cary opened the game's scoring on its second possession when tight end Jackson Gomez finished an eight-play, 74-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Connor Chase.
With the Cary leading only 7-0, Green Hope advanced to a first down on the Imps' 27-yard line, but a personal foul backed the Falcons up to the 42. They ended up punting on their deepest penetration in the first half of Cary territory.
The Imps took a 14-0 lead at halftime early in the second quarter when R.J. Banks burst up the middle on a 10-yard TD run to finish an 11-play, 77-yard drive.
Banks broke off a 38-yard TD run in the third quarter for a 21-0 lead and Marquise Sherrod-Cooper scored on a 39-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished with five carries for 51 yards and two scores.
The Imps were shutting out Green Hope until a snap out of the end zone gave the Falcons a safety in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Green Hope's Tyler Baddick caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from John Nassif to trim the deficit to 21-8. Baddick caught eight balls for 104 yards for the night.
