Athens Drive High School was awarded a grant of $2,000 in art supplies by the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and Cheap Joe's Art Stuff in Boone. Fine arts teachers Margaret Roth and Farrall Hilton wrote the winning grant application.
The Cary High School Cadets competed in the Gray's Creek Drill and Field Meet with 12 JROTC units Oct. 8.
The Cary Cadets finished second overall in the drill competition and third overall in the combined meet.
In individual events Cary High School finished first in the Armed Exhibition Platoon, led by Brian Schmid, and second in Unarmed Exhibition Squad, led by Nereida Rodriguez. The cadets also had third-place performances in Color Guard, led by Anna Earley; Armed Regulation Squad and Armed Exhibition Squad, both led by Brian Schmid; Regulation Unarmed Platoon and Unarmed Exhibition Platoon, both led by Nereida Rodriguez.
The cadets took four of the ten places in Unarmed Knockout Drill:

Jayander Wynn, seventh place
Donna Supple, ninth place
In Armed Knockout Drill, Brian Schmid took sixth place.
The Wake County school district will offer classes through its Lifelong Learning Program.

At least thirteen Wake County schools participated in national Walk to School Day on Oct. 5 that involved students, staff and families enjoying exercise while getting to school.

The sixth grade observed Hispanic Heritage Month by researching Hispanic/Latin American personalities and preparing posters reporting the contributions Hispanic-Americans have made to the world.
West Cary Middle School is collecting coins to help cure diabetes.
Proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. If you would like to donate coins, drop off coins in the main office until Thursday, Oct. 27.
Student Council is collecting pink lids from Yoplait yogurt. Anyone may add to the collection by dropping the lids off in the container in the main office.
