RALEIGH - Athens Drive’s first touchdown of the night Friday against Apex went down on the stat sheet as a 49-yard hookup between junior quarterback Jason West and senior wide receiver A.J. Stewart.

That was the only thing routine about the play.

The flea flicker started with West handing to running back Dominique Lynch and finished with the junior signal caller finding Stewart wide open behind the Apex secondary for one of his easiest completions of the night.

“If we block it right, it’s usually open,” Athens coach Jeff Smouse said.

That was the only gimmick of the night for West and the Jags, who built a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back en route to a 35-0 victory.

After getting on the scoreboard with the early trickery, Athens relied on more conventional play calling for the rest of its first half scoring.

The Jaguars struck again minutes later when West dropped back from his own 37-yard line on the third play of his team’s second possession and unleashed a perfect pass of that hit receiver Mike Estes in stride near midfield. Estes easily outran the Apex defense the rest of the way for the 63-yard touchdown, the longest completion of the night.

West, who finished with 345 yards passing and four touchdowns, and the Jags’ offense were just getting warmed up.

After forcing a three-and-out by Apex, Athens took over at its own 42 and needed six plays to go 58 yards, finishing the drive on a three-yard run by Lynch that pushed the lead to 21-0 with two minutes to play in the first quarter.

The Jags quickly regained possession again after a fumble by Apex at the Athens’ 24. West went 4-for-8 for 64 yards on the series, which ended when he hooked up with Estes on a fade route from 15 yards out to make it 28-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Athens tacked on a final score at the 8:27 mark in the third quarter when West found Stewart along the left sideline for a 25-yard scoring strike and the 35-0 lead.

Athens Drive’s defense held up its end of the bargain throughout, keeping Apex out of the end zone for the shutout. The Cougars threatened late, coming as close as the Athens’ 7-yard line before a fumble and a sack backed Apex all the way near its own 30 to end its best scoring opportunity of the evening.

The win moves the Jaguars to 4-3 (3-1 Tri-Nine) and drops Apex to 1-4 overall and in conference.
