CARY - Playing on four days rest in soggy conditions compounded by a half-hour lightning delay didn't worry Cary football coach Ben Kolstad.
His concern was his players' ability to refocus following gut-wrenching back-to-back losses in Tri-Nine Conference battles with Fuquay-Varina and Middle Creek.
But both the sky and Kolstad's anxiety cleared up as Cary scored on its first possession en route to a 47-14 win over Lee County Friday night at Cooper Field.
"I'm just glad we could put those games behind us, Kolstad said of the bitter losses. Those were tough games.
The Imps, who improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Tri-Nine, had good reason to be concerned about the weather. A week ago, rain postponed their Friday game to Monday, while Lee County's game was canceled.
Cary spread the ball around as six players scored the Imps' seven touchdowns against Lee County (2-4, 1-3 Tri-Nine).
Junior wide receiver Jamal Caesar caught four balls for 66 yards and two touchdowns and senior running back Deandre Henry carried 19 times for 118 yards and one touchdown.
The other touchdowns were scored R.J. Banks on a 16-yard run, Cardavion Payne on a 2-yard run, Elijah Bryant on a 13-yard pass and Chuboy Umeadi on a 57-yard punt return.
Quarterback Connor Chase finished 8-of-16 for 115 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
Cary essentially broke open the game late in the second quarter by taking advantage of a Bill Belichick-like gamble that backfired on Lee County and then a little more than two minutes later an 8-yard Lee County punt.
With Lee County facing a fourth-and-1 and its 29-yard line, the Yellow Jackets went borrowed from the Belichick playbook the one that goes for a first down despite being deep in your own territory
Cary's defense stopped the run for no gain with 3:21 left in the second quarter. Five plays later, Henry scored on a 7-yard run for a 20-7 lead.
After the ensuing kickoff, Cary's defense forced a three-and-out and an 8-yard punt from the Yellow Jackets' 15 gave the Imps the ball at the 23 with 1:02 left in the half.
Three plays later, Payne scored on a 2-yard run for a 26-7 halftime lead.
Cary opened the game with a four-play, 73-yard drive on its first possession. Henry broke off a 30-yard run on first down to get across midfield. Three plays later Connor Chase led Caesar on a post patter for a 29-yard touchdown pass that Caesar caught while laying out in the end zone.
The Imps led 14-0 on Banks' run early in the second quarter.
Lee Country tried to make a game out of it by trimming the deficit to 14-7 when quarterback Chase Arrington scored on a 14-yard run.
