RALEIGH - Anthony Lawsons 25-yard field goal in overtime made the difference for Green Hope in a wild 30-27 win over Sanderson Friday night.
Sanderson missed a 29-yard field goal in its half of the extra frame before Lawsons heroics.
Lawson, who became the starting kicker this week, kicked a 29-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to send it into OT.
I cant say enough about Lawson. Two clutch kicks, Green Hope coach Kwame Dixon said.
Lawson also had a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter when Green Hope (2-1) looked to have things well in hand with a 24-7 lead.
Green Hope quarterback Will Nassif completed his first six passes of the game, including two touchdowns in the span to build the margin. Nassif also ran for the first score of the game.
Sanderson quarterback Evan Parkers 1-yard plunge with less than a minute in the first half cut the deficit to 24-14 and gave the Spartans momentum for a second half comeback.
Sandersons J.R. Soto intercepted Nassif and returned it 67 yards for the score. The extra point was missed but the deficit became 24-20 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Green Hope fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Sanderson recovered at the Falcons 30. Javon Sanders would punch it in and to give Sanderson a 27-24 lead.
