HOLLY SPRINGS - When Holly Springs and Wakefield met on Friday both teams brought their offensive firepower.
The two teams combined for eight touchdowns in the first half alone. Holly Springs set a new school record for points in a game.
Still, in a game that witnessed five lead changes, the Wolverines outlasted the Golden Hawks 50-47.
Saron Reed scored the game winning touchdown on an eight-yard run with 3:16 left in the game for Wakefield, the No. 7 team in the News & Observer rankings.
The Wolverines (2-0) drove 78 yards in just six plays on the game-winning march. Reeds touchdown was set up by 22-yard pass from Connor Mitch to Brandon Clayton.
The Wolverines stopped Holly Springs on the Hawks final drive when a host of Wakefield defenders pulled down quarterback Mike Roach on a 4th-and-5 from the Wolverines 25-yard line.
Roach (16-173) and Markez Davis (16-156) led the Golden Hawks with 329 combined rushing yards. Roach scored five touchdowns, four coming on the ground.
The Golden Hawks (1-1) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead but saw the Wolverines score three straight times to take a 21-14 advantage. Wakefield led 29-28 at halftime following a botched extra point attempt that ended up with a successful 2-point conversion.
One of the keys to the second half was Wakefield backups Evan Braband and Reed coming in to lead clutch drives and finish them off with points.
Still, Holly Springs appeared as if they might finally win the marathon game when Joey Gizzi scored on a five yard run to put the hawks up 47-43 with 4:28 left.
Gizzis score capped a 10-play drive that featured Roach using his legs and arm, accounting for 40 of the drives 48 yards.
In Holly Springs final drive, Mike Roach appeared to connect with his brother Joey Roach on a big gain which would have set the ball up inside the Wolverine 10-yard line, but the officials called Joey Roach out of bounds.
Davis had perhaps the play of the game in the second quarter when he powered through two would be wolverine tacklers en route to an 80-yard score that tied the game at 21-21.
Mitch completed 22-of-36 passes for 354 Yards for Wakefield, while Terrance Scott carried 18 times for 92 yards and three touchdowns.
