The town of Cary is celebrating the opening of the Cary Arts Center at 101 Dry Ave. with a variety of events this weekend.

On Saturday, activities will start at 9 a.m. and feature art exhibits, dance, theater and musical performances, open rehearsals and interactive cultural experiences. Also offered will be class samplers, make-and-take activities for the kids and building tours.

At 2 p.m., the official dedication ceremony will occur on the front porch of the arts center and will be kicked off by the Cary High School Marching Band to pay tribute to the building's history as a former school.

The cornerstone ceremony will also be at 2 p.m. Local cultural groups will be asked to place an item representing their group in the cornerstone that will be placed in the new theater fly tower on the south side of the building.

The Cary Youth Video Project will hold its premiere at 5:30 p.m. Four original documentaries created by local teens will be shown. The project is a summer course in documentary film held at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center. The young filmmakers will be present to talk about their films and answer questions.

The day will finish with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. by Larkin Poe, a duo of soul singing, songwriting sisters and past members of The Lovell Sisters. Their music incorporates elements of folk, Americana, country and pop.

On Sunday, there will be a roundtable discussion at 3 p.m. with artists involved with the design and renovation of the arts center titled, "From Vision to Blueprints." Artists Norie Sato, Jim Hirschfield and Sonya Ishii will discuss their process and how artists' ideas and thinking contributed to the project. The artists will talk about their sources of inspiration and how they worked with architects and engineers. Dr. Hilary Green and Architect Jim Smith will moderate the discussion.
