Wake County school board members say they want more information on how a new student assignment plan will affect school enrollments before they decide on which new schools to build first.

The school board is considering which new schools to build using the bulk of $99.3 million in unspent bond money. Options on the table include building a high school in Cary or Apex and a middle school in North Raleigh or an elementary school in Wake Forest or Wendell.

Board members told staff Tuesday that they can't decide until they have a better idea of how schools will be filled under a new choice-based plan being developed. Instead of school administrators automatically assigning students to schools based on where they live, the new plan would have families pick from a list of schools.

Superintendent Tony Tata told board members he'll come back Aug. 16 with more information about the plan.

The new plan is supposed to be adopted by the school board in September or October.
