In the middle of Major League Baseball's trading deadline, a former Cougar found himself changing organizations.
Apex and UNC-Chapel Hill graduate Tim Federowicz was shipped from the Boston Red Sox's minor league system to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Federowicz was traded in a three-team trade that sent Erik Bedard from the Seattle Mariners to Boston.
Baseball America ranked Federowicz, 23, the 21st best prospect in the Red Sox organization before the season. He hit .277 with eight homers and 52 RBIs for double-A Portland.
Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told the Los Angeles Times: "We needed catching, and we feel we have a real good one coming."
The LA Times also reported Colletti as saying that Federowicz would likely play for the Dodgers' triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque for the rest of this season before having the chance to play in the majors next season.
