CARY - The reason Tyler Silver says this fall will be his final season playing organized football is easy to understand after his most recent swim meet performance.
Silver, a 13-year-old Cary resident that swims for the Shepherds Vineyard Killer Whales of Apex, swept four individual events with two records in the South Wake Invitational Meet on Sunday at the Recreation Club of Lochmere pool.
Silver says he enjoys football enough to play another season this fall as an eighth-grader at Dillard Drive Middle School, but he plans to focus on swimming as a high school athlete once he enters Athens Drive High in the fall of 2012.
"I think I'm a lot better swimmer," Silver said. "I've been playing football, but this year I was determined to get in my best shape (for swimming). That's helps me mentally and physically."
Silver's two meet records in the boys 13-14 age division were 26.59 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke and 25.53 in the 50 butterfly. His other two wins were 23.78 in the 50 free and 31.36 in the 50 breaststroke.
Although Silver has another year to best his records in the 13-14 division, his winning time in the 50 backstroke was already faster than the winning mark in the boys 15-18 division.
Silver led the Killer Whales to the boys team title with 1,405 points, while the Lochmere Swim Team won the girls team title with 1,275 points.
In the overall title that combines the boys and girls scores, Lochmere won with 2,514 points to the Killer Whales' 2,201.5.
In the girls competition, Lochmere's Olivia Carter set four meet records in the 9-10 age group.
"I felt pumped and ready to go," said Carter, a 10-year-old sixth grader who is home-schooled. "I had good fuel for breakfast with a peanut butter bagel. I had lots of friends here and that was fun. They really pushed me."
Carter won the 25 freestyle in 13.02 seconds, the 25 backstroke in 15.32; the 25 breaststroke in 17.37; and the 25 butterfly in 13.74.
Two girls that set a pair of meet records were Emily Dykstra (11-12 age group) of Shepherds Vineyard and Claire Curzan (6-and-under) of The Reserve.
Dykstra's records were 34.15 in the 50 breaststroke and 28.81 in the 50 butterfly.
Curzan's records were 20.90 in the 25 backstroke and 26.93 in the 25 breaststroke.
Other boys setting meet records were Riverwood's Connor Blandford (11-12 age group), 32.92 in the 50 breaststroke; Park Village Porpoise's Alex Matthews (15-18), 22.27 in the 50 freestyle; and the Apex Breakers' Luke Fortner (7-8), 19.88 in the 25 breaststroke.
Other girls with records were Riverwood's Michaela Carter (13-14 division) with a 27.91 in the 50 butterfly and Eagle Ridge Soaring Eagles' Mallery Horvath (15-18) with a 25.75 in the 50 freestyle.
The sixth annual South Wake Invitational Meet, sponsored by the Marlins of Raleigh and Lochmere Swim Team, drew 460 participants in six age group divisions competing in morning and afternoon sessions.
"We want to provide a summer swim meet with a championship feel," said meet director Mary Catherine Troxler. "It's a chance for kids to compete against kids they don't see in dual meets."
